L7 @ The Bluebird Theater, Denver CO 2000-05-23

So recently L7 has been putting out some feelers to see if there was any interest in the band reforming and maybe playing some shows.  A bunch of music press picked up on it and it seems like they might be actually be going to do just that..  Let's hope so because I always enjoyed seeing them live.

A new album would be cool too but I would settle for seeing them bring the rock again live.

That got me to thinking about the last time I saw them in Denver way back in 2000.  I realized that I had never transferred this show of the minidisc masters or shared it in anyway.  It's a pretty decent sounding live recording and I hope you dig it.

Lucero @ The Gothic, Englewood, CO 2006-10-21

Here is a really nice sounding Lucero show from what might have been the height of my fandom.  I was obsessed with this band at the time.  I'm still a big fan but my fandom has cooled off a little bit.  This was on the tour for Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers so it's pre horns and that old familiar twang was still intact for the most part.  Not bagging on what they have evolved into.  They are still an amazing band.

Added bonus in addition to the Gothic show is a Ben Nichols solo set from Independent Records earlier in the day.  I had forgotten how great that one sounded.  Surprised I hadn't shared it before now.

As always go support the bands you love by seeing them live and giving them your money.
They are working hard for you.  They are coming back to Colorado for a 3 night stand at the Gothic for a New Year celebration.  It's going to be a barn burner.

Stray Cats @ CSU Ballroom, Ft Collins 1991-11-20

Here is a fun one.  Stray Cat live in Fort Collins at the C.S.U. Ballroom back in 1991.

No idea who recorded this one but it must have made the rounds in the tape trading world back in the day because I've seen it on a few Stray Cat's collectors lists.

I transferred it off of a cassette for a friend a while back.  Pretty nice audience recording.  Very enjoyable listen.  Enjoy.

The Murder City Devils @ The Gothic, Englewood, CO 2014-11-10

The long awaited return of The Murder City Devils to Colorado did not disappoint.  Nice set of new stuff and the classics.  Glad to see these guys still at it.  Do yourself a favor an pick up their new album The White Ghost Has Blood on Its Hands Again.  Well worth the purchase in my opinion.

Usually the Gothic sounds pretty great but I wasn't in love with the sound on this night.  Seemed like they went for loud for loud sake and sacrificed the dynamics a bit.  Still a nice listen.  Enjoy.

The Murder City Devils @ The Bluebird Theater, Denver CO 2001-10-21

I was a huge fan of the Murder City Devils from the first note of music that I heard.  I caught them every time they rolled through Denver back in the day.  This show was one of what they called their last tour ever.  I was bummed to say the least.  They were just getting going as a band I though.

Well the hiatus only lasted a few years.  They have never returned to be the road dogs that they once were but they started playing shows here and there and have released a 7" and a brand new album in recent years.

Still though no Denver shows. Until their return to the mile high city next week.  Maybe it's perfect that they haven't hit Denver for 13 years.  I'm beyond psyched.

If you were a fan back in the day and didn't know they were still at it.  Do your self a favor and check out their brand new album.

They keep this fairly updated with news.

I'm not sure why I never transferred this recording.  But in anticipation of their show on Monday the 10th at the Gothic I wanted to revist the very last time I saw the band.  Pretty nice sounding I think.  Enjoy

Willie Nelson @ Ebbets Field, Denver CO 1975-09-02

Ebbets Field was a small downtown Denver club that hosted an amazing array of talent during it's existence.
Everyone from J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Dr. John, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Peter Frampton, Dan Hicks, Kraftwerk, Little Feat, Taj Mahal, Don McLean, John Prine, Bob Seger, Robin Trower, Tom Waits, Jerry Jeff Walker, Muddy Waters, and many others graced it stage.

They also recorded and radio broadcast many of the shows that went on there.  Like this classic Wille Nelson and Family show.  I received this show back in the early 00s at the height of CDR trading.
Been meaning to share it for a while now.  Willie's guitarist Jody Payne leads the band through a couple of warm up numbers before Willie comes on and knocks it out of the park.  Enjoy.

Eddie and the Hot Rods @ The Hi Dive Denver, CO (USA) - 2014-10-16

People forget that a lot of the first "punk rock" albums were all on major labels.  Eddie and the Hot Rods were on Island Records.  Future home of U2 and many others.  While a real undercurrent of new and fresh music was happening some of it was just rock and roll repackaged.  This isn't a dig on EATHR.  They were/are a great rock n roll band.  I think the punk label scared people away.  These guys should have been way bigger.

They are another band that barely ever gets over to the USA so when I heard they were going to tour over here I knew I need to check it out.

I think this recording turned out really nice.  The Hi Dive is quickly becoming my favorite sounding room in Denver.  Enjoy.

Throw Rag @ The Clubhouse, Tempe AZ, 2004-02-05

Throw Rag just killed in in the early 00s.  I loved seeing them come to town and would always go check them out.  Sometimes to just see them open other bands and then split.  I even drove down to Tempe AZ one time to see them play with one of my other favorite bands Drag The River.

I'm not sure why I had never transferred this awesome sounding soundboard recording before.  First time sharing this anywhere.  Only took a decade.

Jacko's crowd participation wash board schtick goes on for a really long time at this show.  I split it out to it's own separate track.

Enjoy!

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats @ The Marquis, Denver CO 2014-10-03

Big time buzz on this band at the moment.  I've been hearing the hype in metal media and my metal friend circles for quite some time now.  They have played a few one off shows in the states but this short 15 date tour is really their first time touring the USA.  They have been selling out all the shows too it seems.

Next time I predict they will be playing much bigger venues.  One big indicator of that for me was the number of women in the crowd.  It wasn't the typical sausage fest that most metal shows are. Also their sound is more akin to say Queens Of The Stone Age then Electric Wizard. Creepier lyrics then QOTSA though.

I had heard both of the albums they have released at this point and while I liked therm I wasn't blown away.
Seeing them live really though really clinched it.  These guys really deliver the goods.  Check them out if you ever get chance.

Super happy with how the recording turned out.
Hope you enjoy it.

Cory Branan @ The Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2008-08-28

I can't remember is this was the first time I got to see Cory Branan.  I seem to think maybe I caught him at least one time before.  Either way when Charly Fasano of Fast Geek / Analog Empire asked if I would come down and record Mr Branan for a cassette release I said yes immediately.  I would have been down at the Hi Dive recording it anyway truth be told.

They only put out 100 copies of this cassette so it it long out of print.  The cassette, due to size limitations and other issues, isn't the complete show.  I asked Charly if it was ok for me to post it up here and he said yes.

Cory has just put out a fantastic new album on Bloodshot Records called The No-Hit Wonder.  It will be in my top 10 list this year for sure.  He is a great guitar played and lyricist as well.  He sort of defies categorization since he's not exactly county and he not exactly a pure singer song writer type.  Maybe that is why I'm such a big fan.

At this show he played some old favorites like Tall Green Grass and some tunes at the time were brand newish like The Corner and Survivor Blues.  The finger picking he does on his cover of Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town blows my mind every time I listen to it.  He also breaks out the rarely played The Wreck of the Sultana.  An all round amazing show.

Don't miss a chance to catch Cory Branan live if you get and chance and if you haven't picked up his new album yet go do it right now.  Seriously what are you waiting for.

This being a pure soundboard recording and him not being in front a large chatty crowd.  There are some moments of silence interspersed on this recording.  He also sometimes turns away from the mic for effect.  It's all part of the magic.  Enjoy.

Check out what Cory Branan is up to here  http://corybranan.com/

Check out what Charly Fasano is up to here, including a new spoken word 7" he's putting out with some of the dudes from Lucero backing him up http://fastgeekpress.tumblr.com/

Denver is craft beer mecca and now basically the Amsterdam of America since the legalization of recreational marijuana.  So it was fitting that one of my favorite breweries, TRVE, brought Bongripper out to Colorado for TRVE's Second Anniversary Bacchanal.

The Black Keys @ The Fox, Boulder CO 2009-07-17

5 years ago if you would have asked me if the Black Keys were destined to be playing stadiums I would have said yes based only on the number of Whoooo girls that were at this show.  And that's ok.  The Black Keys deserve it.  They toured for years playing small clubs and paying their dues.  I'm glad to see them be successful.

That said there is no way you could get me to the enormo-dome to check them out these days.  I'm just going to remember them how they were.  I hate to say it but I think the fire has gone out.  It happens to the best of bands.

Hank III @ The Soiled Dove, Denver CO, 2000-11-19

Pretty sure this was Hank's first time in Denver.  I believe he played up at the Little Bear in Evergreen but I missed that one.  This line up of his early touring band featured Duane Denison of Jesus Lizard.

I think I had gear or media problems that night because this is an incomplete recording of the show.
Still it's a pretty good representation of what he was doing way back in 2000.  Enjoy.
